An oxymoron if there ever was one but one that defines the form of democracy practiced in the United States and the one we promote around the world.
Take our 2000 presidential election. 5 political appointees "selected" the president by simply stopping a recount of the contested votes in Florida. Then, in the arrogant fashion these black robed elitists operate they chose the candidate who lost the popular vote; i.e. the people's choice, which is a blatant violation of the basic principles of democracy.
GORE WINS POPULAR VOTE ON 2000 Presidential election
That, in a nut shell is a US version of democracy. And, it doesn't stop at our borders but carries on to the global stage and plays itself out in countries like Venezuela, Egypt, and now Ukraine. Countries in which a majority of their people elect a government that the US does not like or approve of.
Even though these countries all have democratically elected governments the US has taken the position that these forms of democratic governments don't fit the mold and are therefore illegitimate and can be forcibly overthrown with both our blessings and support.
That's how it works in the United States. Democracy ala carte American style. Our founding fathers would be ashamed, and Americans should be not only ashamed, but concerned and outraged about how we have allowed a small and powerful group of elitists literally gut the foundations of democracy to serve the few at the expense of the many.
That's not democracy by any definition.
