In Chicago, 13 police officers were seen "loitering" on video surveillance tapes from a looted political campaign office while there was pandemonium and unrest on the streets in front of it.
”It looked like they were making popcorn and brewing coffee”, criticized Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday. She was “disgusted” by the scenes that she had seen on video. The police have launched internal investigations.
The images from Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush's campaign office were made on May 31 and early morning on June 1. At that point, the police were receiving numerous reports of vandalism, theft and arson.
In Chicago, the case of George Floyd, an African American killed in police violence, had resulted in protests that turned to violent looting
and other crimes, as in other major US cities. Chicago has one of the country’s diverse communities, including a large African-American community, and boasts the famous South Side, which is considered the Harlem of the Midwest.

The exoneration of Jussie Smollett, a black actor who staged his own mugging claiming “white people” had done it was only the most recent of scandals that brought Chicago into the country’s focus.

years with 18 murders in under 24 hours. Actor James Woods expressed the sentiment of many with his Tweet.
