Pelosi: GOP is trying to ‘get away with murder’ of George Floyd

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) went all-in on Congressional Republicans on Tuesday, accusing them of “trying to get away with murder, actually — the murder of George Floyd” because they aren’t cooperating with her police reform proposal.

Pelosi told CBS News Radio correspondent Steve Futterman in an interview that the Senate’s police reform bill is “unsalvageable” and won’t make “any difference.”

The Senate’s police reform bill was introduced by the Senate’s lone Black member, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in early June.

Scott’s bill includes a slew of police reform proposals, but rejects a revision of qualified immunity that Democrats have chosen as their hill to die on. Additionally, Pelosi and her Democrat colleagues want a total ban on chokeholds, another no-go for Republicans.

Pelosi is furious that the Senate is moving ahead with a vote on Scott’s bill instead of listening to her. She told Futterman:

For something to happen, they’re going to have to face the realities of police brutalities, the realities of the need for justice in policing, and the recognition that there’s many good people in law enforcement, but not all. And that we have to address those concerns.

So, when they admit that, and have some suggestions that are worthy of consideration — but so far they were trying to get away with murder, actually — the murder of George Floyd.

Pelosi’s accusation that Scott is somehow responsible for the murder of George Floyd prompted widespread outcry and demands for apologies. In another interview on Wednesday, though, she doubled down on her firey claim.

When asked in an interview on MSNBC whether she would apologize to Scott, she replied: “Absolutely, positively not,” adding that the media gives Republicans “far too much credit for a bill that does nothing.”

Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have accused the GOP of refusing to make meaningful change, ignoring the fact that the GOP bill would authorize a national database of police use-of-force incidents, restrict police chokeholds and set up new training procedures and commissions to study race and law enforcement, among many other proposals. It’s not good enough for radicals in D.C. that seek to completely eviscerate law enforcement agencies nationwide.
