Justice Ruth Ginsburg reveals diagnosis, treatment of liver cancer

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg revealed the tragic news on Friday that she is once again receiving treatment for cancer.
After being hospitalized for a suspected infection earlier this week, Ginsburg released a statement concerning her current state of health.
According to Ginsburg’s statement, she actually received the new cancer diagnosis in February when medical scans found cancerous growths on her liver. She began chemotherapy treatment in May.
“My most recent scan on July 7 indicated a significant reduction of the liver lesions and no new disease,” she continued. “I am tolerating chemotherapy well and am encouraged by the success of my current treatment.”
The 87-year-old justice refuted rumors that recent hospitalizations were related to the cancer diagnosis, clarifying that she was admitted to hospital for treatment of gall stones and an infection.
Though she said that she will continue chemotherapy sessions every two weeks, she still has no plans of retiring. “I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam,” she remarked. “I remain fully able to do that.”
Ginsburg has suffered a number of health scares in recent years. Fox News reported on Friday, “In May, Ginsburg was hospitalized with an infection caused by a gallstone. In November [2019], she was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital after experiencing chills and a fever. In 2018, she was hospitalized with three fractured ribs after a fall at her office.”
This is also Ginsburg’s fifth bout with cancer. She received treatment for colon cancer in 1999 and had a pancreatic tumor removed in 2009. In 2019, she completed three weeks of radiation treatment after another cancerous tumor was discovered on her pancreas. In December 2019 she underwent an operation to remove cancerous lesions found on her lung.
